An afternoon to explore the available technologies and approaches to solving the expected global food shortage problem.
The New Technologies for Food Security session will include a panel and facilitated discussion comparing many of the technologies and approaches (cellular agriculture, robotics, urban agriculture, vertical farming, directed evolution, GMOs, agroeconomy etc.) available to promote food security. The panel and participants will explore:

The New Technologies for Food Security session will include a panel and facilitated discussion comparing many of the technologies and approaches (cellular agriculture, robotics, urban agriculture, vertical farming, directed evolution, GMOs, agroeconomy etc.) available to promote food security. The panel and participants will explore:
- What role does technology play in the development of small-scale local businesses?
- Which technologies have made small-scale, local businesses more feasible?
- Where does it need to go in the future? What technology would food producers like to see developed ?
- How can existing technologies be better incorporated?
Participants
Dan Munshaw, CSCMP, CPSM, C.P.P. Manager, Supply Management, City of Thunder Bay. Dan Munshaw is the Manager of Supply Management for the City of Thunder Bay. He is a seasoned supply professional drawing on thirty-five years’ experience in government, mining and manufacturing. Dan is a strong proponent leveraging strategic public spending, advancing social and economic development. He was recognized as a Provincial Food Champion, 2017. He is a national Nourish cohort, advancing healthy and local foods within healthcare. A Thunder Bay & Area Food Strategy Executive member advancing local food & economic development. He also participates on the Northern Food Distribution Network trying to bring affordable and healthy foods to remote northern Ontario communities. Dan is working on creation of a municipal Indigenous Procurement policy and assisting in establishing a sustainable Indigenous food supply chain. |
Karen Kerk, Coordinator at Thunder Bay and Area Food Strategy
Masters of Social Work Degree, specialization in Community Development & Social Planning; Over 20 years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector in a variety of direct and management/administrative roles; Over 14 years of teaching and facilitation skills; curriculum development, train-the-trainer programs, public speaking, instructional workshops and public forum events; Nine years’ teaching experience in the Social Service Worker and General Arts & Science programs at the College level; Passionate and active community member: non-profit Board involvement, personal and professional community involvement and support |
Kristin Burnett, Lakehead University
Kristin's research interests can broadly be defined as: Indigenous history, race and colonization, settler studies, women and gender history, the social history of health and medicine, and western Canadian history. She has published articles on Indigenous women’s healing practices, focusing specifically on childbirth and birth control; the genesis of colonial health care regimes in Treaty 7 communities; and representations of Native Americans in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight. Her current research projects investigate the relationship between health, race, and settlement in western Canada and food sovereignty and colonialism in northern First Nations communities. |
